The spring gardening season is now officially here, and the staff at Windmill Greenhouses can attest to the fact as they busily prepare for this season's formal opening on Mother’s Day this Saturday, May 11th.

Earlier this year, former owners Sandy and Maurice Couture formally announced their plans to retire and sell Windmill Greenhouses after running the popular gardener’s haven for 24 memorable years.

To alleviate the concerns of many avid gardeners in the community who frequent the greenhouse, it has been confirmed that Windmill Greenhouses will continue to operate as per usual with new owners who remain passionate about the industry.

“We would like to invite you to support the new owners,” the retired couple announced.

“You likely will recognize some of our returning, experienced staff, who are looking forward to helping you this upcoming (gardening) season.”

This complement of staff includes Brenna Wells, the greenhouses’ manager, and staff member Beverley Bedford – both of whom, along with the rest of Windmill’s hard-working staff, are now busy making preparations for the upcoming season.

Windmill Greenhouses prides itself on being a family run, heritage greenhouse with deep roots in the community. Widely known for its variety of herbs, flowers, trees, and vegetable plants, Windmill promises to be your “one stop shop for all your gardening needs” and this hasn’t changed.

Although there has yet to be a confirmation on what plans – if any – Windmill’s new owners have in mind for the Moose Jaw-based greenhouse, it has been confirmed that the yearly Moonlight Shopping tradition will take place as per usual on the evening before Mother’s Day.

To continue celebrating mom as per tradition, Mother’s Day at Windmill will also continue to feature several surprises for the special woman in your life the following day.

“There’s always special bouquets… and a lot of different (planting arrangements and gifts) we bring in specifically for Mother’s Day,” Bedford said.

The occasion, she hinted, will provide an ideal outing for mom and the other outstanding women in your life and is a great way to kick off this year’s garden season.

As the spring gardening season brings about a bustle of activity at Windmill and the new owners adjust to their new venture, a deeper look at the transfer of ownership will be explored in the weeks to come – including their vision for the greenhouse.

“We would like to thank our customers for the incredible friendship and support you gave us over the past 24 years,” Sandy and Maurice wrote. “You made our dream a reality!

“Thank you… and happy gardening!”

Windmill Greenhouses will be open for the yearly Moonlight Shopping event on Friday, May 10 from 7 – 10 p.m., and will then formally open for the season the following day on Saturday, May 11 as it celebrates Mother’s Day from 9 a.m. – 8 p.m.

Following Mother’s Day, the greenhouse will remain open for the season following its regular hours of operation from 9:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. every day except Sundays.
