As harvest operations begin, SaskPower wants to remind farmers about safe practices.
“Farm machinery coming into contact with powerlines is unfortunately a common occurrence, despite the fact that it is completely preventable,” said Kevin Schwing, SaskPower’s director of health and safety. “These incidents can lead to equipment damage, lengthy unplanned power outages, injuries and even death.”
According to a SaskPower news release, 240 incidents of farm machinery contacting electrical equipment have been reported since April 1 of this year.
Farmers should keep the following tips in mind:
- Get plenty of rest, remember to drink lots of water, and take breaks throughout the day.
- Lower equipment to the lowest possible level when moving. Use a spotter to prevent contact with overhead power lines.
- Call 1-866-828-4888 before digging or visit www.sask1stcall.com.
If your equipment does contact a power line, stay in the cab and call SaskPower at 306-310-2220 or call 911. Do not touch your vehicle. If the vehicle has caught fire, however, you must exit it immediately.
Be sure to:
- Make sure no wires are in your way;
- Cross your arms and put your feet together;
- Jump as far away as you can and hop at least 10 metres, or 33 feet away;
Meanwhile, drivers should watch for farm equipment on roads to avoid collisions.
