Washington took Game 1 with a 3-2 overtime win against Montreal in Game 1. Alexander Ovechkin was the star for the Capitals on Monday. Ovechkin checked an item off his career bucket list by scoring his first playoff overtime goal to win the game. Ovechkin has been in headlines the entire regular season on his way to passing the great Wayne Gretzky as the NHL's all-time leading goal scorer.
He scored the first goal of the game and added an assist, while goalie Logan Thompson was a huge factor by stopping 33 shots by the Canadiens.
Before Game 1, the teams last met in January, with the Canadiens coming away with a 3-2 victory. Washington opened up the scoring in the first period with a Jacob Chychrun power-play goal, but Montreal had a huge second period, netting a pair of goals.
However, Washington answered in the third, tying the game off a Lars Eller goal. The Canadiens had the last laugh, though, as just 1:15 into the first overtime, Nick Suzuki scored the game-winning goal.
The Canadiens have won the Stanley Cup 24 times, but not since 1993, while the Capitals have just one Stanley Cup title, winning in 2018.
