Josh Bryden’s team will have to settle for a shot at a bronze medal at the FISU World University Winter Games in Torino, Italy.

Bryden, who finished third in the round-robin with a 5-4 record, took on the second-seeded United States in a semifinal Tuesday morning.

The Americans started strong with the last rock advantage. The U.S. was content to blank the opening end to get a feel for the ice. In the second end, the United States team, skipped by Caden Herbert, went to work, eventually scoring five points.

Bryden tried to respond with his first hammer of the contest, but his aggression cost him. He gave up a steal of three, handing Herbert an 8-0 lead through three ends.

Bryden scored a single point in the fourth end before stealing one in the fifth and two in the sixth to trail 8-4, entering the final two ends. However, Herbert was more than content to blank the seventh end before running Bryden out of rocks in the eighth end.

Bryden’s University of Regina team will play Switzerland in a bronze medal game, while the United States will face Norway for the gold.
