Tourism Moose Jaw is holding a 20th birthday party for its building at 450 Diefenbaker Drive this Saturday, July 22, with sponsorship from the Moose Jaw Co-op for free birthday cake, meal and mini trolley rides by donation, and proceeds going to the Humane Society.
The event will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A $5 donation entitles visitors to a hot dog, a pop, and a short ride on the trolley, just to see what it's like. For visitors who perhaps have already eaten and just want the trolley ride either way, a minimum $2 donation gets you aboard. All profit after costs for the event will be donated to the Moose Jaw Humane Society (MJHS).
"We knew the building was turning 20 this year and, you know, for people in Moose Jaw our building is probably an important tourism feature, but maybe they're used to it," said Jacki L'Heureux-Mason, executive director of Tourism Moose Jaw (TMJ).
"But to people who are out of town, it's really a wonderful stop. We get compliments all the time on the cleanliness of the bathrooms, on our little gift shop, and all the things we have to offer to our guests. So, the 20th anniversary was something we wanted to celebrate and get people out for and make locals especially understand its value to our city."
The 15-minute trolley rides are targeted at younger guests, L'Heureux-Mason explained, to hold their attention for a little while and give them a chance to look out the windows and wave at people. If the weather is reasonable, there might even be some furry friends from the MJHS.
"It's a really good opportunity for locals to come in to our office and take a look around, see some of the unique things we have in our store, and learn more about the tours and things we offer. It's a great way to get some insight into what's happening in Moose Jaw."
