Peacock’s Nikolina Kapovic lead the way down the backstretch in the junior girls 1,500 metres on Thursday afternoon. Two days earlier, Kapovic set a new city record in the 3,000 metres.

When Cornerstone Christian School competitor Aliyah Block began setting city records in the throws back in 2019, there was a sense that her marks would stand for a very, very long time.

As it turns out, one of the first records she set only lasted four years -- and by the time fellow Cornerstone competitor Ademide Adewumi is done with things, the whole record book for girls shot put and discus just might be rewritten.

Adewumi set two new intermediate girls city championship records in the events, clearing 11.27 metres in the shot put before following up with a 32.51-metre effort in the discus.

Adewumi didn’t just inch her way into the record books, either -- her shot put mark would have beat Block by almost a full metre, and her discus showing was almost a metre and a half better than Caitin Folk’s old record of 31.15 metres set back in 2006.

Adewumi’s showings were among five new records set in cool and breezy conditions at Gutheridge Field, including one of the oldest still on the books.

When the intermediate boys 100 metres hurdles record was originally set, the first Top Gun was the top movie at the box office, Metallica had just released ‘Master of Puppets’ and the world was still in shock after the Challenger space shuttle disaster.

Vanier’s Zayden Anderson crossed the line in 14.15 seconds in the race on Thursday, breaking the old mark of 14.58 seconds set by Vanier’s John Bothwell back in 1986 and tied by Peacock’s James Riley in 1995.

Peacock distance specialist Nikolina Kapovic kept up her winning ways and set a new record in the process, breaking a mark that dated back to the glory days of the Moose Jaw Rotary Track and Field Club.

Competing in the junior girls 3,000 metres on Tuesday, Kapovic would cross the line in 11:01.41, besting by just over three seconds the previous record set by fellow Tornadoes standout and multiple-time provincial medalist Kailey Smith set back in 2003.

It’s the second year in a row Kapovic has set a record in the 3,000 metres, having also broke the intermediate girls mark last year.

The final record of the day came in the senior girls 4x100 metres, where the Central Cyclones took down the 47-year-old mark of 53-seconds flat set by Riverview back in 1976. It was as close as could be, though, with Central crossing the line in 2,97 seconds.

The record setters will be looking to do the same at the South Central district meet this Wednesday at Gutheridge Field.
