Penny Barker dropped 6-4 decision to Chelsea Carey in the Viterra Scotties A-side final on Friday afternoon.
Penny Barker will have a bit more work to do in order to qualify for the playoff round at the Viterra Scotties provincial women’s curling championship.

Barker and her Moose Jaw Ford Curling Centre foursome of third Christie Gamble, second Jenna Enge and lead Danielle Sicinski dropped a 6-4 decision to Regina’s Chelsea Carey in the A-side final at the tournament in Assiniboia on Friday afternoon, and as a result will find themselves in action in the B-side semifinal this evening.

Barker got off to a solid start against the 2019 Scotties Tournament of Hearts champion, using the hammer to score a pair in the first end. Carey blanked the next end before putting up three in the third to take a one-point lead, setting the stage for a low-scoring battle the rest of the way

The two teams exchanged single points over the next three ends, leading to a 4-4 draw heading into the eighth. There, Carey used the hammer to pick up one, and after Barker blanked the ninth, stole one in the 10th for the two-point victory.

Next up in Barker’s first B-side contest is 2020 Viterra Scotties champion Robyn Silvernagle, who after losing her opener to Martensville’s Sherry Anderson rebounded with wins over a pair of Regina rinks in Lorraine Schneider and Stasia Wisniewski to advance to the B-semi.

Carey and her rink of third Jolene Campbell, second Stephanie Schmidt and lead Jennifer Armstrong are the first team to qualify for the playoffs and will next see action in the Page 1-2 game on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Kronau’s Amber Holland -- who hails from Moose Jaw and is a former Scotties national champion -- does battle with Saskatoon’s Ashley Howard in the other B-semifinal. Howard includes Moose Jaw’s Skylar Ackerman at lead.
