The Briercrest College Clippers men’s and women’s basketball teams are only a handful of hours away from tipping off the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference playoffs.
The Clippers men’s basketball team ran their win streak to eight games last weekend, taking a 93-80 win over NAIT and defeating Northwestern Polytechnic 87-80 at home to finish with a 14-7 record and in fourth place in the ACAC South Division standings.
As a result, they’ll host the 12-9 Red Deer Kings at Margaret P. Reimer gymnasium in Caronport on Thursday night, with the winner advancing to face first place and 19-2 St. Mary’s University in Calgary on Friday. A win there will send the Clippers to the ACAC Final Four, which will be hosted by the highest-seeded remaining team.
The Clippers women’s basketball team also finished their regular season with a pair of wins, defeating NAIT 72-54 and following up with an 88-48 win over Northwestern Polytechnic to cap their campaign at 13-8 and in fourth place in the South Division.
They’re also at home Thursday when they take on fifth-place 11-8 Ambrose College, with the winner there advancing to face first-place 15-3 Lethbridge College. As with the men, the winner of that contest will play in the Final Four at the highest remaining seed during the Mar. 2 weekend.
The Clippers women tip off at 6 p.m., the men at 8 p.m.
The Clippers men's volleyball team will begin defence of their ACAC title on Thursday night when they take on Lakeland College at the championship tournament in Calgary.
Briecrest capped the campaign with a 15-4 record and in second place in the ACAC South, Lakeland was 13-6 and finished second in the North Division. The winner will advance to face the winner of Keyano College and Old’s College on Friday, with the bronze and gold medal games on Saturday.
The Briecrest women’s volleyball team finished 12-7 and in third place in the ACAC South and will be in action at the championship tournament in Lethbridge.
Their opening-round opponent will be the University of Alberta Augustana, who were 16-3 and second in the North. The winner of that contest will play the winner of Keyano College and Ambrose College on Saturday, followed by the final on Saturday.
The Briercrest Clippers men’s hockey team is one weekend away from history.
The Clippers picked up five of six points in league action this past weekend thanks to a 5-4 overtime loss to SAIT on Friday and 4-2 win over the Trojans on Saturday, improving to 16-6-2-1 on the campaign and maintaining their hold on first place.
As a result, a single win in their final two games of the regular season at Red Deer against the 14-8 Kings will see the Clippers finish in first place in seven-team league for the first time in ACAC history.
Briercrest takes on the Kings on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon.
The Clippers will begin their playoff run during the Friday, Mar. 8 weekend when they take on the winner of the best-of-three series between the third-place and sixth-place teams taking place this weekend.
