While the federal election is still months away, many voters are already making up their minds, according to a recent opinion survey by the Angus Reid Institute.

Currently, 38 per cent of voters say that if an election were held tomorrow they would vote for the Conservatives. By contrast, about 30 per cent of voters say they would vote for the Liberals.

Fifty per cent of those surveyed in the Saskatchewan/Manitoba region plan to vote Conservative, compared to 20 per cent for the Liberals. The Green Party follows behind at 16 per cent, while just 10 per cent in the region plan to vote for the NDP.

Angus Reid says the top issue for voters is the environment and climate change, as chosen by 33 per cent of those surveyed. As a comparison, just 22 per cent of voters selected health care as the top issue.

Nearly four in 10 (37 per cent) say they are voting against a party, rather than supporting one. This is true of 56 per cent of voters who say they will support the Conservative Party. The numbers are identical for those who plan to vote Liberal.

Conservative voters are sure of their vote, with 63 per cent saying they are certain of their voting intentions. Just 33 of Liberal supporters say the same.

The federal leader viewed most favourably is the Green Party’s Elizabeth May, with a rating of 46 per cent. Conservative leader Andrew Scheer is next at 39 per cent, Trudeau follows at 34 per cent, along with Jagmeet Singh of the NDP at 33 per cent, and Maxime Bernie of the People’s Party of Canada at 17 per cent. Justin Trudeau has the largest unfavourable rating at 60 per cent.

Finally, 32 per cent of Canadians say they approve of Justin Trudeau’s performance as prime minister, while 61 per cent disapprove.
