Canucks ride stellar start from Varjassy to 18U AAA win over Athletics

Moose Jaw puts up four runs in first inning, go on to 5-2 victory in Sask Premier Baseball League action

One night after enduring one of the toughest losses in recent team history, the Moose Jaw Canucks are back in the Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League 18U AAA win column.

The Canucks scored four runs in the first inning and rode a stellar outing on the mound from starter Nathan Varjassy to a 5-2 win over the Regina Athletics at Ross Wells Park.

Moose Jaw improved to 3-12-0 with the victory and sit in sixth place in the eight-team league.

After Regina scored one in the top of the first, the Canucks put their plate discipline to work in the bottom half of the inning, taking advantage of four walks and a hit by pitch to send four runs across the plate while batting through their order.

That would be more than enough offence for Varjassy, who would pitch six innings and allow two runs on four hits while striking out seven and walking five. Kyle Duncan pitched a scoreless seventh to pick up the save.

Varjassy now has 29 strikeouts on the season to sit fourth overall in the SPBL in that category, teammate Kaleb Waller -- who pitched a no-hitter Wednesday but dropped a 1-0 decision -- is second overall with 34 strikeouts.

Kaedyn Banilevic had a solid night at the plate for the Canucks, going 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Caleb Newkirk crossed the plate twice and Duncan was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

The Canucks are back in action Sunday afternoon when they travel to Martensville for a doubleheader with the Sask5 Giants. Game times are 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. at Mocon Field.
