Chess tonight, anyone?

If you’ve ever wanted to learn the ins and outs of chess, or were looking for someone to test your moves against, the Moose Jaw Public Library has an all-ages chess club night that meets once a month at 7 p.m. — and they’ll be there tonight.

Players meet in the south meeting room upstairs, where there are nine chess boards ready for them to put their best strategies on the table. The library also makes sure to have books about the game, for those interested in learning the strategy.

The evening event has been going since September and has a dependable group of regulars, according to assistant head librarian Shevaun Ruby.

Having a recurring chess night came about because of the library’s other board game nights, and the interest in limiting it exclusively to chess — and also due to a recent documentary about prodigy and reigning World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen.

Ruby encourages everyone to stop in, whether a seasoned chess veteran or a new player.

“I would just say to come and have a good time playing chess and bring a friend so that we can have a good set of people who want to play.”
