The Royal Canadian Legion is inviting the community to come together and celebrate Canada for its third annual Canada Day Cabaret street party this Saturday, June 29.

The cabaret is set to begin at 6 p.m. with live entertainment provided by The Two Easy Duo running from 6:30 to 9 p.m. followed by The Uncoolas, who will perform live from 9:30 p.m. until the event’s closing at midnight.

Both bands are expected to play a wide variety of musical genres and are accustomed to reading the crowd for cues on what to play next – plus they’re likely going to be taking requests.

This year’s Canada Day celebration promises to be bigger and better than in previous years, and Amanda Gagnon, the Legion’s business administrator, said the entertainment will be “way better” than previously.

“We’re getting more fencing, so we’ll be a bigger venue this year,” she confirmed, adding that “we’ve kind of stepped it up on our bands this year” in contrast to last year’s lineup which she said came with less than enthusiastic feedback.

The night will feature a 50/50 draw with the chance to win $4,000, a $400 Co-op gift card will be raffled off, and an available on-site concession will be run by Elks Canada with at least hamburgers and tacos in a bag on the menu.

The Legion is also seeking additional volunteers to help set up the venue at 9 a.m. on June 29 and clean up the site at 9 a.m. on June 30. Volunteer duties will include setting up and taking down around 320 chairs, 30 tables, plus tents and barricades. Anyone interested in volunteering their time is invited to call 306-692-5453 or simply inquire in person at the event.

All proceeds from the cabaret fundraiser will help support the Legion’s day-to-day maintenance costs.

Gagnon said that, in addition to honouring our shared Canadian heritage, the event seeks to promote a sense of community connection and mental health.

“Come out, hang around with some really good and caring people, have a few drinks, dance like there’s no tomorrow, and go home and feel good,” she announced.

“That’s really what it’s about – bringing the community together because I think they need more events like this.”

Tickets are available now by visiting the Legion and around 67 of the 500 available tickets have been sold as of June 25. As well, Gagnon confirmed that any remaining tickets will be available for purchase at the door.

Debit will be available at the main door, however most of the purchasing options will be on a cash-only basis and Gagnon advised there’s no ATM available on site.

Gagnon also recommended that guests bring their own lawn chairs as available seating may not be overly comfortable.

The Royal Canadian Legion’s Branch 59 is located at 268 High Street West and can be reached at 306-692-5453.
