Cornerstone Christian School held its annual Canadian Christian Universities Tour Oct. 24, which provides students the opportunity to learn more about their upcoming post-secondary education options.
“They pop by every year and do a presentation with our students. This year we hosted representatives from Trinity Western University, Ambrose University, Briercrest College and Seminar, Providence College, the Canadian Mennonite University, and Kings University,” said Cornerstone’s vice principal Tanya Johnson who helped organize the event.
In previous years such as last year in 2022, representatives from eastern Canada have also attended but this year the tour featured an exclusive list of western representatives.
“For this (year) it was kind of the western contingent,” she said. “Those universities are located in BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.”
The representatives formed a large but incomplete sample of accredited institutions in western Canada. Participating institutions are typically organized through Ambrose University in Calgary, and the list depends on who is available.
“It’s usually organized by one of the representatives from Ambrose in Calgary. They coordinate with all of the recognized Christian Universities,” Johnson explained.
“These are all accredited institutions. Their degree programs are the equivalent and recognized in the same manner as degrees from, for example, the University of Saskatchewan or the University of Regina… they are on par with those accredited institutions,” she said.
During the event, post-secondary representatives set up booths so students could interact, gather more information, and ask any questions they may have had.
“(Students can) get guidebooks, some merchandise, enter some draws… there’s lots of interactions with our students and their reps,” said Johnson.
“We (also) host them during one of our chapel times. So, at that point, each of the reps gets up and speaks a little about their school and what they offer, as well as maybe advice on housing, scholarships, and things like that.
“They give an overview of what post-secondary life might be like, as well as some of their program highlights,” she added.
Cornerstone Christian School also provides in-house resources and programs to help students make the post-secondary transition. “We do a lot of things as the year goes on for our kids who need to start thinking about their futures,” confirmed Johnson.
“Our Grade 9 students are on their way to Reality Check tomorrow (at Sask. Polytechnic),” she said.
“Next week, our Grade 11 and 12 (students) are going to what is called ‘Seeing Your Future’ in Regina. It’s a big post-secondary fair held at Evraz Place. They’ll get to see not only institutions like we are here (at Cornerstone), but also any of the other schools whether from Saskatchewan… or from across Canada.
“We periodically host other groups that come in from time to time, just maybe not in a fair-like event as when the Christian Universities Tour comes. As an example, (Sask. Polytech) will come in, set up a booth, and interact with our students as well.”
Johnson said that tradespeople representing the Youth Apprenticeship Program also visit the school regularly, and the last tour took place near the end of September.
“It’s always nice when the Canadian Christian Universities Tour comes. Because it’s an annual event, we get to see some of the career (options) each year and make connections that way. Several of our students will in fact be reaching out to those schools, and then they become their students as well. It’s always nice to reconnect that way,” concluded Johnson.
