Cornerstone Christian School’s annual Christmas concert is in its final stages of preparation as student volunteers from grades 7 to 12 make finishing touches for the upcoming A Glorious Christmas concert. This year’s concert will be held at the Hillcrest Apostolic Church on Friday, Dec. 15 starting at 7 p.m.
The concert follows the school’s earlier Nov. 8 – 10 theatrical performance, Disney’s High School Musical, which was held at the Moose Jaw Cultural Centre. A Glorious Christmas is intended to focus on several traditional Christmas songs, where the earlier performance featured a dramatic presentation.
Admission to the concert is by donation only and is otherwise free of charge.
This year the school is adding one new feature to the annual event: a roast beef dinner will be provided to guests starting at 5:30 p.m. for $25 per person. The meal will be prepared by Charlotte’s Catering and features one of its signature dishes, including a range of its popular salads.
The meal option has been added to help the school raise funds in support of its choir program.
“It’s a musical presentation that comprises a number of familiar songs that are done in the gospel style, and just reworked into different genres. It’s mostly (done in the) gospel and soul genre of music,” explained Josh Carley, the school’s choir director. Carley noted that most of the pieces will be familiar, and the selection includes many popular Christmas carols.
The production has around 35 students participating. “I should also mention that with the concert there will be an 11-piece orchestra playing as well,” Carley added.
In another twist this year, a group of the school’s alumni have been invited back to partake in the concert.
“We also have alumni coming back to sing for part of the concert,” Carley confirmed. “Anyone who is interested can sign up to come and sing.” This selection of alumni will involve any of Cornerstone’s former graduates who were willing and able to make it and the reunion-like atmosphere is sure to complement the spirit of the holidays.
“We have a really enthusiastic group of kids who are really passionate about singing and performing,” Carley said. His hope is that the concert will help spread the spirit of the Christmas season.
