A new year means new committees for members of city council, who will serve on these groups for up to a year — or at least until the fall municipal election.

During the Nov. 27 regular meeting, council voted to appoint the mayor and councillors to various committees and advisory boards for a term of office starting Jan. 1, 2024 and concluding on Dec. 31, 2023, or until a successor is appointed.

Each year, council must make these appointments to boards, committees and commissions associated with the City of Moose Jaw. The city clerk’s office sends letters to council members about their terms on those groups and any council vacancies that existed as of Dec. 31, 2023.

Council approved the following appointments during the meeting:

  • Coun. Jamey Logan has been appointed to the accessible community advisory committee, the public works, infrastructure and environment advisory committee and the community-based coalition of Moose Jaw
  • Coun. Heather Eby has been named to the community cleanup committee, the public art committee, the Moose Jaw Public Library board, the Palliser Regional Library board and Downtown Moose Jaw Association
  • Coun. Crystal Froese has been appointed to the cultural diversity advisory committee, the heritage advisory committee, the museum and art gallery board, the South Central Transportation Committee, Wakamow Valley Authority board, the youth advisory committee, Board of Police Commissioners and Cultural Centre,
  • Coun. Kim Robinson has been named to the parks, recreation and facilities advisory committee, the investment committee, the Humane Society and Tourism Moose Jaw
  • Coun. Doug Blanc has been appointed to the exhibition board and Board of Police Commissioners
  • Coun. Dawn Luhning has been named to the investment committee and the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association (SUMA)

The mayor is automatically appointed to the public library board, the Board of Police Commissioners and the airport authority based on sections in the acts that govern those bodies.

However, the mayor’s term on the investment committee ends on Nov. 30, 2025. Meanwhile, Luhning’s and Robinson’s terms on the investment committee also end on Nov. 30, 2025. Similarly, Luhning’s term as SUMA representative ends on Nov. 30, 2024.

The next regular council meeting is Monday, Dec. 4.
