The Moose Jaw Fire Department answered a distress call at Empire Apartments at 3.17 a.m.on Dece. 21, located at the corner of Caribou Street and 4th Ave NW. Firefighters arrived on the scene to put the fire out.
“We (had) five units on scene; three units are still working. We had to change some crews and trucks out because of the cold weather and we used five pumpers,” said Deputy Fire Chief Mike Russell. “Although we are still hitting hot fires, they are under control now. There’s a lot of hot debris that is still smouldering that we are still putting water to.”
All the building occupants were taken to a hotel and the Salvation Army is taking care of them; about four to five people were displaced.
During the incident, three firefighters were injured with their needs addressed by EMS on site. One was transported to a local hospital, where he was later released.
Twenty-four firefighters worked to get the fire under control.
The cause of the fire is unknown and is still under investigation.
