Moose Jaw’s Ethan Brentnell is chasing his dreams. This weekend, he will complete two major goals — release his debut album, and perform on the Mae Wilson stage.
Brentnell will play a concert on Saturday night at the Cultural Centre. The performance will serve as the release of his first album, This Much I Know.
“To be honest, I have been looking forward to this for a long time. I know it is not like Radio City Music Hall or anything like that, but I have always wanted to perform at the Mae Wilson Theatre. It is always been a dream of mine,” said Brentnell.
“I used to perform there for Central’s musicals. For a couple of years I was in the pit band and last year I was in The Sound of Music as Captain von Trapp. So I have had a chance to perform there, but now I am ready to do my own thing. I am just so excited and it will be such an honour.”
The album was recorded at Nebulus Entertainment here in Moose Jaw. It features six original songs, along with some covers.
Brentnell says he is ready for the world to hear his music.
“I have been waiting a long time to do this, so I am more excited than nervous. I am ready for people to hear me, whether they like me or not. I just want to get myself out there and play my music and show it to the world.”
Brentnell has a unique style.
“My style of music is easy listening. A lot of people like to put it in jazz. There is a little bit of blues. I play a lot of finger-style acoustic. I have a band back me up while I sing. It is a different style and I don’t think a lot of people have heard it before, but people seem to like it. I throw in some rock ‘n’ roll and other stuff in there, too.”
This will likely be your last opportunity for the foreseeable future that you will be able to see him perform in Moose Jaw; Brentnell will soon leave for Windsor, ON where he will continue pursuing a career in music. He is looking to forward to being part of a thriving music scene full of opportunities. More than anything, he just wants to write and perform.
“I’m not going over there to become famous per se; I would just like to play and record as much as I can and to get my music out there. It’s kind of simple,” said Brentnell. “For me, it’s about the love of music.”
The show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are just $25 and that includes a copy of Brentnell’s album. The album will also be available on major streaming platforms as of Saturday. To purchase tickets, contact the cultural Centre box office at 306-693-4700 or visit www.moosejawculture.ca.
