Few changes at the top as SBRA barrel racing provincials enter final day

Top time lowered but leaders remain largely the same heading into Thursday morning’s Open Short Go
It was going to take a pretty impressive run for Regina’s Angela Tapp and Leading Fast Chic see their first-place time overtaken at the Saskatchewan Barrel Racing Association provincial championships..

And as it turns out, that’s exactly what happened.

Your new leader? None other than Regina’s Angela Tapp and Leading Fast Chic.

Tapp covered the cloverleaf in a blistering 14.169 seconds during the second Open Go at the Golden Mile Arena on Wednesday, betteriing her first place time  of 14.170 set Tuesday by one one-thousandth of a second.

Tapp headed into the SBRA provincials as the 12th ranked rider in the Canadian Cowboys Association standings, despite having taken part in half the number of performances as her competitors.

It was one of the few changes at the top of the Open leaderboard, as the rest of the top four remained the same after a speedy set of runs during the first Open Go.

The one newcomer was Moose Jaw’s own Kollins Drake, who rode High Class Slinky to a time of 14.248 to bump Sheho’s Ferrah Fogg and Turnpike County out of fifth place by seven thousandths of a second.

Drake has had a solid season on CCA circuit, holding down eighth place overall in the junior girls barrel racing standings. Interestingly enough, Fogg herself has had plenty of top performances this season and is currently the top ranked Saskatchewan rider in the CCA ladies barrel racing standings, having won over $4,000 so far this year.

The remainder of the top five include Eriksdale, Man.’s Dawn Vandersteen (Royal Cash, 14.179) in second, Gravelbourg’s Krystal Grad (A Special Perks, 14.194) at third and Moosomin’s Amanda Porter (Miss Kiddy Dual, 14.200) in fourth.

The provincial championships wrap up on Thursday with the Open Short Go, which will feature the top 20 per cent of riders from the event taking one last run at the top times.

Action begins at 9 a.m. and is expected to wrap up at noon, with the Open award winners being presented immediately after.

Fans are once again more than welcome, and entry is free.
