Four new members sworn into Moose Jaw Police Service in private ceremony

Four new officers were sworn-in to the Moose Jaw Police Service on Jan. 7 in a private ceremony

The Moose Jaw Police Service has officially added four new members to its ranks in a private swearing-in ceremony held on Jan. 7.

The ceremony was closed to public and family due to COVID-19 restrictions, with only invited MJPS officials and new recruits Cst. Jared Brin, Cst. Daniel Chamberlain, Cst. Jayme Hoffman and Cst. Jesse Seida in attendance.

Two of the new recruits will be filling positions left open by the resignation of two probationary constables earlier this fall, while the remaining two new officers will be expanding the service.

The MJPS has stated in previous swearing-in ceremonies that the selection process focuses on character and integrity as well as skillsets, identifying potential recruits who will fit into the community and the service.

Of the four new recruits, Chamberlain, Hoffman and Seida hail from Moose Jaw, while Brin is from Saskatchewan but is returning to the province from British Columbia to join the MJPS.

Cst. Hoffman said she has had an interest in policing since she was a child, which was further confirmed after completing a human justice program at the University of Regina. She is looking forward to joining the service in her hometown.

“Moose Jaw is a great city to live in, and I see this as an opportunity to give back to the community and help people,” said Hoffman.

Cst. Seida, also from Moose Jaw, is returning to the community after working in a correctional centre for three years. He feels that experience has been a good stepping stone to pursue a career in policing here in Moose Jaw.

“I was raised, pretty well, in this community by other cops and I’d like to do the same with the younger generation coming up, to help build people’s trust and be able to protect and serve them,” said Seida.

Cst. Chamberlain said he has had an interest in policing for many years, applying to the MJPS after working in the construction business for many years. After applying previously to the MJPS about 15 years ago, he said he is excited to finally pursue a career he always wanted to do.

“It’s very exciting, beyond exciting, to be born and raised in Moose Jaw and love this community, and now be able to serve it,” said Chamberlain. “[The hope] is to serve and help our community, to protect it for future generations and keep it safe.”

Cst. Brin previously served with the RCMP here in Saskatchewan, before moving to B.C. to pursue other career opportunities. His return to the prairies was prompted by long-standing connection with the Moose Jaw community and an interest in community policing.

“I knew I wanted to return to policing and so I then narrowed it down over time to where I really wanted to be, and that’s Moose Jaw,” said Brin. “I have family connections here [and] I’ve always liked the size of the city and being an experienced police officer, I know what type of policing I’d like to do and Moose Jaw is a great bulls-eye there.”

Brin, Chamberlain, Hoffman and Seida have now sworn the oath of police, code of ethics, and oath of secrecy and will begin their training at the Saskatchewan Police College in Regina on Jan. 11.
