Grab your gear and head for the water — free fishing weekend will be held July 13 and 14.

Saskatchewan’s annual summer free fishing weekend gives residents and visitors an opportunity to fish in any of the province's public waters open to sport fishing. You can do so without purchasing a fishing licence.

There are, however, a few rules to keep in mind.

First, anyone planning to take part in free fishing weekend should note that all other fishing regulations, including possession limits, gear restrictions, and size limits on some lakes and rivers, remain in effect. Second, free fishing weekend does not apply in national parks. Finally, anyone planning on taking fish out of the province must purchase a licence.

“Free fishing weekend is a great opportunity for families and visitors to make summer memories at one of our province’s many lakes,” Environment Minister Dustin Duncan said in a press release. “And Saskatchewan offers some of the best freshwater fishing in the world.”

Free fishing weekend has been held annualy in Saskatchewan since 1989. It encourages participation in sport fishing and increases public awareness about the value and diversity of angling opportunities in the province.

The province also offers a winter version of free fishing weekend.

According to a government news release, approximately 250,000 people sport fish in Saskatchewan each year. This number includes more than 50,000 out-of-province anglers.
