Gedak, Jacobson first to qualify for playoffs in Moose Jaw Sask Curling Tour stop

Gamble, Knapp also in hunt as tournament continues at Moose Jaw Ford Curling Centre.
The first two championship event teams have been decided at the Sask Curling Tour Moose Jaw stop this weekend, and one of them has plenty of local connections.

The Estevan-based team of Brent Gedak, third Jason Ackerman, second Derek Owens and lead Curtis Horwath won their first three contests to claim one of two ‘A’ event berths in the championship round.

Owens hails from Moose Jaw, while Gedak and Ackerman both won provincial junior championships while playing out of the old Hillcrest Sports Centre.

Gedak won his opener 6-3 over Saskatoon’s Matthew Drewitz before taking a 9-4 win over Trent Knapp -- who includes Moose Jaw’s Brock Montgomery at third -- in the ‘A’ semifinal and rolling to a 7-0 win over Canora’s Rob Zuravloff in the qualifying game.

Saskatoon’s Jason Jacobson defeated Regina’s Shane Vollman 5-0 in the other championship qualifier.

Moose Jaw’s Ben Gamble and his rink of third Braydan Mohns, second Tyler Krupski and lead Scott Manners took a 10-3 win over Drewtiz to stay alive on the ‘B’ side and will face Regina’s Josh Bryden in a ‘B’ event qualifier during the 7 p.m. draw Saturday.

Knapp, meanwhile, will take on Lumsden’s Sam Wills in the other ‘B’ qualifier after Wills defeated Moose Jaw’s Dustin Woloschuk 9-3 to advance.

The ‘C’ event qualifiers will see Regina’s Jaedon Miller taking on Zuravloff and Winnipeg’s Corey Chambers duelling Vollman.

After the final preliminary draw Saturday night, the championship round quarter-finals begin at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, followed by the semifinals at 1 p.m. and championship game at 4:30 p.m.
