The Moose Jaw WINMAR Warriors pulled off one of their most impressive comebacks of the season on Sunday afternoon in Sask Male AAA Hockey League action against the Notre Dame Hounds, but just couldn’t find a way to hit the win column.
Caleb Potter scored with the goaltender pulled and one second left on the clock to tie the game in Wilcox, but the Hounds would go on to a 5-4 win in overtime.
Notre Dame couldn’t have asked for a better start, as Ash Mitchelmore and Cameron Kuzma scored in the first period to give the home team a 2-0 lead.
The Warriors’ Bryce Boughen and Hounds’ Bryant Linklater exchanged goals early in the second before Moose Jaw’s Dylan Duzan and Joel Pinel scored to tie things up with 3:52 to play in the period.
Carter Ellsworth would restore the lead for Notre Dame before the period was out, though, and after the two teams played a scoreless third, Potter would come through with his late-game heroics.
Kuzma then scored his second of the game with 1:18 to play in overtime to give Notre Dame the win.
Ryan Bain faced 22 shots in the loss, Mariko Bercier stopped 26 for Notre Dame.
There was no comeback in the books for the Warriors less than 24 hours earlier, as the Regina Pat Canadians took a 2-0 lead out of the first period and went on to a 4-1 victory.
Michael Donovan and Casey Brown had Regina’s first-period goals, but Duzan would get once back on the power play 42 seconds into the second frame.
That would be as close as Moose Jaw would get, though, as Ellis Mieyette scored midway through the second and Casey Brown tacked on an insurance marker late in the third.
Luke McKechnie had 25 saves for Moose Jaw, Taylor Tabashniuk stopped 23 for the Pat Canadians.
The WINMAR Warriors are now 17-17-3-0 on the campaign and remain in seventh place, a point up on Tisdale in eighth place and two back of Estevan for sixth.
The Warriors are back in action on Wednesday night when they travel to Saskatoon to face the Contacts. Next home action is Thursday, Feb. 8 when the Pat Canadians are in town, with game time 7 p.m. at the Moose Jaw Events Centre.
