The Moose Jaw Community Choir is stepping outside of their box and has planned their first performance show ever; the first annual Spring Sing, taking place on May 4, will be their exciting debut alongside their guest, the Assiniboia Community Choir.
Diane Rhodes, choir director, said the show is something they thought would be fun, and could do each year.
“The choir thought it would be fun to kind of have a goal and to try and have a deadline to prepare for, make the pieces as beautiful as possible and kind of do our very best,” said Rhodes. “And they thought they'd like to share their music with the people of Moose Jaw.”
The set list includes some recognizable songs from movies, like the Greatest Showman and Coco, and some music from different styles like Latin, African Zulu, and Irish tunes, along with some spiritual pieces. Rhodes listed a range of music, with a little something for everyone.
“[We had] to pick a variety — fast ones, slow ones, I like to have a variety of genres like pop and classical and all in between,” said Rhodes about the song choices. “And you don't want it to be too hard that it's not any fun because it's too difficult, and then you don't want it to be too easy either.”
The Moose Jaw Community Choir is a group purely in it for enjoyment, as they formed in 2017 to fulfill the itch to sing.
“We just felt there wasn't currently a choir in Moose Jaw, and then kind of had a meeting of people that had spoken to each other and said that we were really missing singing,” said Rhodes. “We just wanted an opportunity to harmonize and sing together.”
The choir currently boasts 60 members, ranging in age from their 20s to 80s, and are always welcoming to new faces. Their practices will start up again in the fall, on Monday nights in the choral room at Central Collegiate.
“If you like to sing and you enjoy singing choral music, four-part harmony, then you're welcome to come,” said Rhodes.
The Spring Sing will be taking place at St. Andrew’s United Church, on May 4 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door — children 12 & under will get free admission.
