Saskatchewan will celebrate Parks Week from July 14 to 20 with a wide variety of activities and events in parks across the province.

“This week will offer something for everyone,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Gene Makowsky said in a press release. “Whether you plan to take in a park for the very first time or you are an avid park user, a trip to one of our many Saskatchewan Provincial Parks will not disappoint.”

The fun begins with free fishing weekend, which will take place this Saturday and Sunday. It is an opportunity to fish without purchasing an angling licence.

Inexperienced anglers can develop their skills through the Learn to Fish program. You will have an opportunity to learn from Jeff or Jason Matity, two local Saskatchewan fishing experts. The program will be offered at several parks, including Buffalo Pound Provincial Park on July 14. The program will be offered from 10 a.m. to noon or from 1 to 3 p.m. at Maple Vale Beach.

Don’t have the gear to get started? No problem! Throughout July, Tourism Saskatchewan and SaskParks will be giving away free fishing lures at many provincial parks. Recipients are then encouraged to take a photo with their catch and new lure for a chance to win a prize.

There is also the “Take a Hike” Challenge in all provincial parks on July 20, which is Canada Parks Day. Track your steps on that day and then submit a screenshot or picture of your total steps to the SaskParks Facebook page for a chance to win one of three prize packs.

Other activities throughout the month include performances by both hoop dancer Terrance Littletent and Saskatchewan Express in select parks.

More information on activities in specific parks is available online.
