Get ready to enjoy the great outdoors.

June is Recreation and Parks Month, and there are lots of opportunities for Moose Javians to stay active.

Parks month in Wakamow

Throughout the month, Wakamow will be holding several special events. This includes International Trails Day, which will take place on Saturday, June 1. While out on the trails, be sure to snap a photo and share it on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.

“It’s a self-guided tour of the trails,” explained Trish German, Wakamow administrator and event coordinator. “So anyone who wants to get out and enjoy the over 20 km of trails we have in the valley, if they take a selfie or a great nature shot and tag Wakamow Valley with the hashtag #TakeAHike, they will be eligible to win a prize package, which is a backpack full of a bunch of trail gear.”

Dance Fitness with Kyra will host a dance fitness class at the Kinsmen Wellesely Pavilion on June 4 at 7 p.m. Meanwhile, you are encouraged to get out on the water on June 18, thanks to the Canoe and Kayak Club. Meet by the campground dock at 7 p.m. Please park at Kiwanis so as not to disturb campers.

Finally, a team challenge will be held at the new challenge course in Connor Park on June 8. Registration is at 10 a.m., with the race starting at 11. Contact the Wakamow office at 306-692-2717 to register.

“That will sort of finally be the grand opening of the Connor Park challenge course that we had installed last fall. We are looking for teams of four — we are looking for youth, adult males, adult females, co-ed adults, and seniors 55-plus. We will do a timed relay challenge, so everyone will take their turn doing a lap. The top team in each category will win a prize,” said German. “It is our kick-off to get more people aware of the course and that it is ready to be used.”

All Recreation and Parks activities in Wakamow are offered free of charge.

New recreation pass

This month it will now be easier than ever to enjoy the city’s recreational facilities. That is because the all new recreation pass will be available starting June 1. For a special price you can gain access to YaraCentre, the Kinsmen Sportsplex, Phyllis Dewar Outdoor Pool, and PlaMor Palace.

A monthly pass costs:

  • $34.75 for children ages 3-12
  • $48.75 for youth ages 13-17
  • $55.75 for adults
  • $48.75 for seniors
  • $125.25 for a family pass (two adults/four children).

Three-month and annual passes are also available. More information is available at YaraCentre or at the Kinsmen Sportsplex.

Stay cool this summer

The Phyllis Dewar Outdoor Pool will open June 10. Throughout the summer the pool will host public, adult, and lap swims, along with water workouts, and learn-to-swim classes. Swimming lessons will begin June 10.

Please note that free family and public swims will move to the outdoor pool in June and will be held on Wednesday evenings. The free teen swim will also move to the Phyllis Dewar facility and will be held Saturdays from 9 to 10:30 p.m.

The city’s spray parks are also set to open on June 10. This includes the new Co-op Eastend Spray Park (Ninth Ave. and Ominica St. East), the Crescent Park Spray Park, the 1996 Summer Games Spray Park (16th Ave. SW) and the Elgin Spray Park (Eighth Ave. NW and Hall St. West).

Equipment programs

Of course, you need to have the proper equipment to enjoy summertime.

Thankfully, the City of Moose Jaw will once again offer its Bicycle Recycle Program and Sports Equipment Library. Both can be accessed at 441 Fairford St. West.

This initiative provides families and youth in Moose Jaw with free used bikes or sporting equipment. This program is available from spring through the fall. Hours of operation are the first Wednesday of the month from 5 to 8 p.m. This month you can stop by on June 5. You can also make an appointment by calling 306-694-4447.
