Moose Jaw Police were called on to defuse a dangerous situation on Friday night.
It began when officers responded to a complaint of a stolen car from the 100 block of Manitoba St. E. The vehicle was left running and was found abandoned minutes later in the 200 block of High St. E.
Upon investigation, the police determined the suspect was Mark Kelly of Moose Jaw. He was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for a parole violation.
Kelly was located in a downtown apartment. Police attempted to arrest Kelly but he fled back into the apartment. He is said to have brandished a knife towards the police officers and then allegedly barricaded himself in a bedroom with other people.
Police say Kelly began threatening suicide. As a result, Moose Jaw Police Negotiators were brought in to communicate. They were eventually able to convince Kelly to allow two people to exit the bedroom.
The RCMP Emergency Response Team (ERT) was called in to assist with the arrest.
Kelly was transported to the Dr. F.H. Wigmore Regional Hospital in Moose Jaw for treatment of a self-inflicted injury.
Kelly has been charged with assault with a weapon and theft of a motor vehicle. He will appear in court this week.
Police continue to investigate.
