Senior’s Week was formally signed into effect on Sept. 29, and officially begins throughout the City of Moose Jaw on Sunday, Oct. 1, 2023.
Mayor Clive Tolley was in attendance at Timothy Eaton Gardens and his signature made Senior’s Week official in the city.
“This is near and dear to my heart, because of course I am a senior,” Tolley said to a small crowd at the event. Just prior, the XYZ Auditorium at Timothy Eaton Gardens was filled with the sound of live entertainment as a local senior’s band was about to take an intermission for the signing.
After some good-natured introductions, Mayor Tolley read the proclamation.
“Whereas seniors make a difference in our community, and we recognize tremendous contributions seniors have made to our community, from supporting family and friends to volunteering, and whereas the value seniors bring to a community is priceless as they hold our history, have valuable memories and experiences, they help us as we look to the future,” he read aloud.
“Moose Jaw & District Senior Citizens Association will be hosting events during Senior’s Week in an effort to reach out to seniors in our community and show us what our community has to offer them.
“Therefore I, Clive Tolley, Mayor of the City of Moose Jaw, do proclaim the week of October 1 – October 7 Senior’s Week in the City of Moose Jaw. I urge all citizens to join in observance of this special week by participating in all activities Moose Jaw & District Senior Citizens Association have planned.”
Mayor Tolley then expressed his appreciation and thanked Moose Jaw & District Senior Citizens Association (MJDSCA) management for their invitation to the Timothy Eaton Gardens. A proclamation such as this would have traditionally been held at City Hall.
“I appreciate being invited over and I appreciate the opportunity,” said Tolley. He added that the event marked a great opportunity to draw attention to MJDSCA and the work it does for adults over the age of 55 in the community.
“I read in the Moose Jaw Express that there’s increased hours for pickle ball, so I see that that’s increasing. I’m seeing the guys over playing snooker, and some of them I’ve played with in high school,” Tolley said to those in attendance. His message highlights the integrated role of seniors and reminds us of the many seniors we cherish in our own lives.
Senior’s Week is a city-wide declaration, and organizations have the opportunity to host events in celebration of seniors in the community.
At the MJDSCA, weekday activities will begin on Monday, Oct. 2 with a pancake breakfast running from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. The breakfast will be held at the Timothy Eaton Gardens’ main dining hall, and meals will be served by paramedics with Medavie Health Services West. The breakfast will cost $5.00 per person.
