The Moose Jaw Police Service will be one agency of many across North America taking part in National Rail Safety Week, by joining one of the largest rail safety enforcement initiatives in Canada and the U.S.

On Sept. 24-25, MJPS will participate in Operation Clear Track, a program that aims to reduce the number of railway crossing incidents.

According to Operation Lifesaver Inc, the organization behind Operation Clear Track, crossing and trespassing incidents injure or kill more than 2,100 people each year. Motorists are encouraged to remember to pay attention at rail crossings and obey signage, lights and barrier arms to avoid accidents.

Members of the MJPS will be enforcing railway crossing and trespassing laws at crossings in the area that have been deemed areas of concern, handing out citations and warnings to violators.

They will also be providing brochures with rail safety tips for motorists and pedestrians, as part of the initiative.
