Robson and her rink of third Candace Newkirk, second Malysha Johnstone and lead Sheri Logan are currently 1-2 at the 14-team tournament currently underway in Ottawa, but are back in action tonight before closing out their round-robin showing on Thursday.
Robson got off to a tough start against Spruce Grove’s Tiffany Steuber on Monday, dropping an 8-2 decision. Steuber blanked the first two ends before taking three in the third, and after holding the local foursome to one on the fourth, added a deuce in the fifth to go up 5-1. Another Alberta three-ender in the seventh brought things to an early end.
Robson rebounded in style in their lone game Tuesday against Nunavut’s Denise Hutchings (0-4), picking up single points in the first two ends and extending their lead to 4-1 through five. That set the stage for the contest’s deciding frame, as Robson stole four in the sixth and Hutchings decided to shake hands.
The early game on Wednesday was a heartbreaker for the Moose Jaw foursome, as Manitoba’s Deb McCreanor (3-1) scored three in the final end to take a 5-4 victory. The game was tied 2-2 through five ends, but after blanking the sixth, Robson would get her deuce to go up 4-2 and set up the deciding end.
Robson sits fifth in Pool B, one win back of third place and a spot in the playoff round.
They’re back in action Wednesday evening against Newfoundland’s Jennifer Taylor (1-2) before taking on Northern Ontario’s Laroque (2-1) in Thursday’s morning draw and wrapping up the round robin against Prince Edward Island’s Shelly Bradley (1-2) Thursday evening.
The top three teams from each pool advance to the quarter-finals, with the first-place teams receiving a bye to the semifinal.
The Club Championship format is designed to give rinks who opt not to play the high-level national curling tours a chance to compete for a Canadian title. Rinks can’t have players who competed on the World Curling Tour or in national-level events in order to keep the spirit of the ‘club’ format in place.
This is the second appearance at the event for the Robson foursome, after they reached the playoffs in 2019 but fell to eventual bronze medalist Ontario in the quarter-final.
