Moose Square Park next on the list as part of Playground Replacement Program

Survey currently underway on City of Moose Jaw website to help choose new design and features for new-and-improved facility

Youngsters living in and around he 600 block of Stadacona Street West will soon have a brand new playground to enjoy on the warm summer days ahead.

The City of Moose Jaw announced Thursday, Mar. 31 that Moose Square Park will be the next playground to receive a complete refurbishment and upgrade as part of the ongoing Playground Renewal Program.

City workers performed the first replacement in the spring and early summer of 2021, turning the worn-out equipment and play area at Clark Gillies Park into a brand-new, safe and modern facility that quickly became a popular stop for area residents.

The success of that initial project has the Moose Jaw Parks and Recreation following much the same plan.

A survey is currently online at www.surveymonkey.com/r/MooseSquarePlayground offering a variety of questions with regards to usage and potential design elements, including a pair of choices for a new main play structure. The city plans to retain the existing swings, riding features, seesaws and monkey bars, but create a safer environment around all current equipment.

Residents in the area will also receive a mail-out covering the same questions.

The survey results will help finalize the playground design and contractor.

The replacement program aims to evaluate and improve as necessary all 30 playground sites managed by the Parks and Recreation over the next 15 years, with four playgrounds due for replacement by fall of 2026.

Based on the Moose Square Park assessment released in Aug. 2021, initial plans for the area included:
Recommending a smaller playground due to number of playgrounds already in area

  • Consider accessible features/surfacing and components for children under five;
  • Consider adding a pathway from the sidewalk to playground;
  • Consider adding a basketball net due to the number of older children in the neighbourhood;
  • Replace garbage receptacle, benches, and picnic table;
  • Keep the current additional amenities.

Construction began on Clark Gillies Park in the spring of 2021 and officially opened in late August, with a similar timeline expected for Moose Park.
