Mortlach holding fundraiser to support museum and rink

The museum has a large collection of antiques and artifacts that all have some connection to residents past and present, while the rink is a busy hive of activity during the year

The Village of Mortlach’s museum and recreation boards are hosting a fundraiser to support two important institutions in the community: the museum itself and the rink.

The fundraiser takes place on Saturday, Feb. 8 in the Mortlach Hall, beginning at 6:30 p.m. with a bingo. This will be followed by the Winter Social and Charity Auction — live and silent — at 8 p.m. Free coffee, tea, juice and treats will be offered, with desserts and other items to be auctioned. There will also be a penny parade and 50/50 during the evening.

The event is free and everyone is encouraged to attend.

The museum board used to host this event on its own, but it became too much for the group since there were so few members, explained museum treasurer Bonnie Drake. So museum members asked the community’s recreation board to team up to help host the event.

The money will support the upkeep and maintenance of the museum and rink buildings.

“They are very important in our community,” said Drake.

The museum has a large collection of antiques and artifacts that all have some connection to residents past and present, while the rink is a busy hive of activity during the year.

There are many items up for auction, she said. For example, since the Mortlach United Church is closing, some of the pews and antique chairs are being auctioned off. Also up for auction include a canvas photo of community grain elevators, clothing with sports logos, metal art and hardware tools.

Businesses in both Mortlach and Moose Jaw have contributed to the prize and auction items.

Drake noted this fundraiser has been going for many years.

“It’s very, very well attended and supported in our community,” she added.
