Today, June 20, is World Refugee Day. This international observance is meant to raise awareness of the refugee situation around the world.

The theme of this year’s World Refugee Day is #StepWithRefugees.

Locally, the Moose Jaw Multicultural Council (MJMC) will observe the day on Wednesday, June 26 with a pair of film screenings at the library theatre.

The two films will be 19 Days and Last Chance. The former is a short documentary about Calgary refugees, while the latter is a feature-length documentary about five people fleeing homophobia as they seek asylum in Canada.

A discussion panel will precede the screenings.

“They will be able to share their experiences about coming to Canada,” said Tyler Bastedo, community connections coordinator with the MJMC.

The event starts at 6:30 p.m. and there is no charge to attend. Refreshments will be served followed the films. All ages are welcome.
