MOOSE JAW — Do you know of a tree in Moose Jaw that you believe is worthy of being recognized? If so, the City of Moose Jaw wants to hear from you as it selects a tree to designate as part of an ongoing tradition during National Tree Day which falls on Wednesday, Sept. 25 this year.

Nominations are open now for residents to help determine this year’s Tree of Significance.

For a tree to get considered, it should have some outstanding property that sets it apart from countless others in the community. A tree that’s unusual or interesting, noteworthy due to its size or shape, or a rare species for the region will be considered. As well, a tree with historical significance makes an ideal candidate.

Nominated trees should be in an area accessible to the public, such as common areas or in the front yard of a residential address.

Last year’s Tree of Significance was a mature little leaf linden tree located at 1316 Princess Crescent. This tree was selected because of its fragrant, late-spring blossoms and its large, even form. Linden trees from the Malvaceae family are native to many parts of Europe and this tree was said to be an excellent representation of the species.

The City of Moose Jaw’s Tree of Significance program has been held yearly since the inception of both National Tree Day and the National Forest Week, which were initiated back in 2011.

Canada’s National Tree Day takes place on the Wednesday of National Forest Week, which always falls on the last full week in the month of September.

Nomination forms can be downloaded at MooseJaw.ca or picked up in person at the parks and recreation office at city hall. Submissions can be made in person at city hall or by emailing Recreation@MooseJaw.ca.

The deadline for nominations is Friday, Sept. 20. The winning tree(s) will be announced on Wednesday, Sept. 25 during National Tree Day.
