The bands are booked, the alcohol is being chilled and the food is being prepared — all that’s needed now is for people to attend the Royal Canadian Legion’s Canada Day Cabaret.
Branch No. 59 is holding its second annual cabaret on Saturday, July 1, as part of wider activities within the community to celebrate this country’s 156th birthday.
Last year's event raised more than $10,000.
The fundraiser takes place on the 200 block of High Street West in front of the legion building, with the gates opening at 5 p.m. and the bar operating from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. The food vendors will include Benny’s, Kabayan and Smoke N Que.
Gary Kincaid kicks off the entertainment at 6 p.m., while Brandon and Company go on at 9 p.m. to close out the night.
Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at the legion office and the gate. While there will be chairs and tables, attendees can bring a lawn chair should they wish.
All money raised will support the legion’s efforts to purchase a new building and ensure a veterans’ organization remains in Moose Jaw for years to come.
“Preparations are going along pretty good. We’re still rounding up volunteers, so if anybody would like to volunteer, they can call the office at 306-692-5453. We could use a few extra hands … ,” said Roy LaBuick, past president and event volunteer.
“We’re looking forward to a really good night with our entertainment.”
There will be a 50/50 draw during the evening, while attendees will have a chance to win a hand-made quilt worth roughly $400 that Janine Rivard donated.
“A lot of time went into this. This is a beautiful quilt … . She didn’t want anything for it, so we were really appreciative of that,” LaBuick said.
LaBuick noted that the legion’s cabaret fits in well with the other activities happening in Moose Jaw on Canada Day.
“It’s our second annual (cabaret). There’s no signs of it slowing down,” he added. “I think this is going to become a real good annual event that’s going to help the veterans of Moose Jaw and surrounding area.”
