Pee Wee Warriors battle to tie with Weyburn

Three goals in third period see Wings overcome 6-3 deficit
The Moose Jaw Warriors had the Weyburn Wings right where they wanted them in Saskatchewan AA Hockey League Pee Wee division action on Saturday.

A three-goal lead midway through the third period? What’s not to like?

But the hockey gods had other things in mind.

The Wings would score three times – including the game-tying goal with 53 seconds to play – as the two squads eventually settled for a 6-6 draw in action at the Red Knight Arena.

And if they wanted any indication as to how things were going to play out, they just had to look at the first period.

The Warriors and Wings each scored two power play goals in the first 8:01 and would leave the frame with Moose Jaw leading 4-3. Ryan Gibbs scored the Warriors’ first two goals at 17:59 and 14:03 before Carter Hudyma potted a pair 39 seconds apart beginning at 8:40, with his second marker coming shorthanded.

Hudyma then finished off the hat trick with the only goal of the second period before Tyson Ross extended the lead to 6-3 1:57 into the third.

Cue the comeback.

Langston Gold scored power play markers at 7:21 and 15:59 to get Weyburn within one, setting the stage for Justin Whitrow to emerge as the Wings hero with the game-tying goal as time ran down.

Whitrow finished with a pair of goals, Brennan Brown and Jaxin Karst had their other markers.

Cam Beisal was in goal for Moose Jaw, Jack Missal for the Wings.

The Warriors are now 6-6-4 on the season, good enough for third place in the South Sask division.

They’re back in action Thursday, Jan. 9 when they’re back on the ice against Weyburn. Game time is 7:15 p.m. at the Bert Hunt.
