The Moose Jaw Miller Express have had a handful of games as of late where it was either score a whole bunch of runs or fall short on the scoreboard.
Wednesday night wasn’t one of those times.
Facing the Fort McMurray Giants in Western Canadian Baseball League action at Ross Wells Park, the Express had yet another solid start from Kellan Voggesser and equally as decent performances from Haldon Craig and Jake King in relief as they went on to a 6-2 victory.
Moose Jaw is now 16-10 on the season and are three games up on the Medicine Hat Mavericks for top spot in the WCBL East Division.
Voggesser was on form from the first pitch and held the Giants to a single run on five hits over five innings while striking out seven. Craig was just as sharp over the next three innings, allowing a run on three hits and striking out a pair before King finished things off with a 1-2-3 ninth.
The Express bats took a bit of time to get going -- thanks to four innings of shutout work by Giants starter Lukas Touma -- but a pair of runs in the fifth inning gave them the lead for good, with a single marker in the sixth and three more in the seventh providing the rest of their offence.
Austin Gurney led the way at the plate with a 2-for-3 night that included a run scored as Moose Jaw’s balanced offence once again did it’s job. All told, the six runs came from six different players, with lead-off hitter Parker Dorrance the only other player with more than one hit. He finished 2-for-5 with a run scored.
The Miller Express have Thursday night off but are back in action Friday when they travel to Regina to face the Red Sox.
Next home action is Saturday, July 1 against the Weyburn Beavers at Ross Wells Park, with all sorts of Canada Day activities taking place. A tailgate party will be held at the park beginning at 4 p.m., featuring a beer gardens and beer batter prices at two for $8. First pitch is at 6:05 p.m., with your ticket including both the tailgate party and the game.
The Miller Express will also be wearing special Canada Day jerseys that will be auctioned off during the game.
