KINDERSLEY -- It was another good day for Regina’s Jolene Campbell at the Viterra Prairie Pinnacle women’s provincial curling championship in Kindersley, and they’ve now locked down first place in the round robin because of it.
Campbell and her rink of third Rachel Erickson, second Abby Ackland and lead Dayna Demmans improved to 7-0 heading into the final games of the round robin, taking another two victories on Friday.
The 2016 champion opened the day with an 8-3 win over Saskatoon’s Nancy Martin during the afternoon draw and then followed up with a narrow win over Balgonie’s Mandy Selzer, pulling off a double tap-back to the button with her final shot in the 11th end to take a 7-6 win.
Martin and her Nutana foursome of third Chaelynn Kitz, second Kadriana Lott and lead Deanna Doig rebounded in style after their loss, putting up a pair of four-enders on their way to a 9-4 six-end win over Saskatoon’s Amber Holland.
As a result, Martin has a 5-2 record and joins Campbell and Moose Jaw’s Penny Barker -- also at 5-2 -- in having clinched spots in the Page Playoffs.
Barker and her rink of third Lindsay Bertsch, second Taryn Schachtel and lead Danielle Sicinski defeated Selzer 8-3 in their first game of the day but couldn’t pull off a comeback in their second, falling 8-7 to Regina’s Brooklyn Stevenson.
Other scores from the afternoon draw saw Saskatoon’s Ashley Thevenot defeat fellow Nutana foursome Jessica McCartney 9-6 and Stevenson get past Holland 9-7.
The evening draw also saw Thevenot defeat Regina’s Michelle Englot 9-3.
The standings heading into Saturday’s action are as follows:
Jolene Campbell 7-0
Nancy Martin 5-2
Penny Barker 5-2
Ashley Thevenot 4-3
Michelle Englot 3-4
Mandy Selzer 3-4
Jessica McCartney 2-5
Brooklyn Stevenson 2-5
Amber Holland 1-7
Much like the SaskTel Tankard men’s draw, the final draw on Saturday at 10 a.m. will decide the final playoff position. A Thevenot win over Selzer gives her the spot, while a Selzer win creates a tiebreaker situation that could also include Englot should she defeat Stevenson. Martin faces Barker and Campbell takes on McCartney in games that will determine Page Playoff seeding.
