Plenty to be decided as Sask Women’s Curling Tour Moose Jaw enters final round robin draw

Host of teams still in contention for playoff spots as tournament approaches playoffs on Sunday morning
Three teams with Scotties Tournament of Hearts pedigrees are off to a solid start at the Sask Women’s Curling Tour stop in Moose Jaw this weekend.

And for the vast majority of the 20-team field, there’s still plenty to be decided heading into the final draw on Saturday night at Moose Jaw Ford Curling Centre.

Moose Jaw’s Penny Barker and her rink of third Deanna Doig, second Jenna Enge and lead Danielle Sicinski finished in first place in Pool B with a 3-0 record after taking an 8-6 win over Hanna Johnson (0-3)  to open the event and following with a 6-4 victory over Stasia Wisniewski (2-1) and 10-1 win over last-minute addition Elaine Robson (1-2).

Two-time Scotties champion Chelsea Carey and her rink of third Jolene Campbell, second Stephanie Schmidt and lead Jennifer Armstrong took top spot out of Pool A, also at 3-0. They defeated Moose Jaw’s Lorraine Arguin (1-2) 9-5 in their first game and followed with a 7-1 win over Brett Barber (1-2) and an 8-2 victory over Lorraine Schneider (1-2).

Robyn Silvernagle -- who represented Saskatchewan at the 2020 Scotties in Moose Jaw -- and her rink of third Kristen Streifel, second Jessie Hunkin and lead Dayna Demers took a  5-3 win over Madison Kleiter (1-1) in the afternoon draw to improve to 2-0 in Pool D. Silvernagle won her opener against Mandy Selzer and closes out the round robin against Ashley Howard (1-1) in the 5 p.m. draw Saturday.

Pool E sees multiple-time provincial Scotties champion Michelle Englot tied for first at 2-1 with Sarah Hoag, while Emily Haupstein -- who includes Moose Jaw’s Skylar Ackerman at third -- is 1-2.

Kristy Watling sits at 2-0 to hold down first place in Pool C. Sherilee Orsted -- with Moose Jaw’s Candace Newkirk at third -- is 1-1 and takes on Jade Bloor in her final round robin game this evening.

Interestingly enough, both Arguin and Robson could reach the playoffs if things shake out their way in the final draw, given so many teams could finish at 1-2.

Arguin and her rink of third Dondalee Deis, second Tamara Quintin and lead Tanis Swallow defeated Schneider 6-4 in the second draw for their win.

Robson and her rotating rink of Haley Spencer, Amber Montgomery, Sheri Logan, Malysha Johnstone and Roberta Fonger replaced last-minute cancellation Sherry Anderson but picked up a 6-2 win over Johnson in the second draw.

The top eight teams after the round robin advance to the quarter-finals at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, followed by the semifinals at 12 p.m. and championship game at 3 p.m.

Admission is $6 per draw or $30 for a weekend pass.
