That time finally came earlier this week.
The CSSHL announced on Monday that approval had been granted to Caronport-based PHA to increase by two teams, with Under-15 and Under-18 Prep Division squads set to join their U16 and U17 offerings from the 2020-21 campaign.
“We are very excited about the opportunity to expand our offering of education-based hockey in Saskatchewan to the U15 Prep and U18 Prep levels,” said PHA president Justin Simpkins in a press release. “Adding these two top programs gives us a developmental ladder for our student-athletes and their families. We look forward to having young men join us in Grade 9 and graduating from BCA and PHA.”
The PHA program has become well known for what it offers to young players, with their hockey-centric approach aiming to develop quality individuals on top of improving their skill as players. That includes dedication in the classroom at Briercrest Christian Academy on top of their work on the ice, something that has quickly led to the PHA developing a reputation for developing players not only impressive in games but away from the arena as well.
That’s not to say there hasn’t been success on the ice in their short time in existence -- since joining the CSSHL, the PHA has seen dozens of players move on to the next level in their hockey careers, including five who are currently playing in the Western Hockey League.
“The development of our student-athletes over these past four seasons has been something many have commented on and noticed,” said PHA director of player development and Moose Jaw Warriors assistant coach Scott King. “(This) announcement gives the families the opportunity and the choice to now stay inside our education-based program and continue developing with us at the next level of play. Being able to have two or more consecutive years of development with an athlete is where we typically see huge gains in their overall game. We can’t wait to see student-athletes begin their high school journey with us and graduate here at PHA.”
Moose Jaw Warriors forward Atley Calvert played for PHA for two seasons and was signed by the team in the fall of 2019.
“PHA gave me the opportunity to work on my game every day,” said Calvert, who is currently playing with the Warriors in the East Division bubble. “The coaches and staff provided the support I needed to improve my on-ice skills. PHA takes it beyond the ice and taught me to become a better teammate and person in the community. The program provided me a complete set of skills to deal with the highs and lows of hockey and life.”
The PHA and CSSHL will now look to the future and scheduling, pending the ongoing pandemic. The CSSHL’s 13th season begins this fall.
