The Downtown Moose Jaw Association (DMJA), a non-profit working on behalf of Moose Jaw's Main Street shopping core, has officially opened online registration for its second annual Little Chicago Show & Shine car show, taking place on Saturday, Sept. 16.
Last year was the first iteration of the car show, which blocks off a large section of Main St. to display cars ranging from vintage rebuilt automobiles to modern supercars, highly customized and souped up WRXs to movie homage pieces tributing the likes of Mad Max.
Organizers had been hoping for at least 150 vehicles, and were surprised and delighted when well over 200 turned out. The event proved again how popular car shows are in southern Sask — there are plenty of them, but Saskatchewanians can't get enough.
"We were thrilled with the turnout last year and we've expanded registration this year for up to 300 vehicles," explained Alex Carlton.
Carlton is a founding board member of the DMJA, owner of the Crushed Can Rec Room & Bar and Cask82, and the event chairperson for the Little Chicago Show & Shine.
"We've also added a third live music stage and will once again have 12 award categories, along with gift bags and dash plaques for the first 200 entrants."
Registration costs $20 per vehicle. Entrants must select their vehicle category and pay through the DMJA website at downtownmoosejaw.ca/littlechicagoshowandshine.
The show will run from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Vehicles will line Main Street from Caribou all the way to Manitoba.
Downtown businesses and restaurants will, of course, be open and ready for visitors. Carlton and his fellow board members hope last year's turnout will be topped in each successive year, drawing tourists and enthusiasts and providing a welcome boost to the local economy.
