Saskatchewan’s Lieutenant Governor, the Honourable W. Thomas Malloy, has died following a battle with pancreatic cancer.
Premier Scott Moe commented on Malloy’s passing in a news release.
“Krista and I are saddened by the news of the passing of our Lieutenant Governor. On behalf of the Government of Saskatchewan and people of our province, I offer my sincere condolences to Mr. Molloy’s family, and to the many that called him a friend. His Honour had a lasting impact on our province and nation in his five decades of dedicated service. His many contributions to the betterment of our country leaves a tremendous legacy that I hope provides his family with some comfort in this time of grief.”
The news release describes Malloy as a respected Saskatoon lawyer, negotiator, and author who was renowned for his treaty-making and reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.
He was invested as an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1996, and as a Member of the Saskatchewan Order of Merit in 2012. He received the 2018 Ramon John Hnatyshyn Award for Law from the Canadian Bar Association. Molloy served as Chancellor of the University of Saskatchewan from 2001 to 2007 and was Chancellor Emeritus.
A previous news release in May stated the Malloy was undergoing cancer treatment.
Thomas Molloy was installed as the 22nd Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan on March 21st, 2018.
Books of condolence will be available for the public to sign at Government House, in the main lobby of the Legislative Building in Regina beginning on Wednesday. Online condolences can be sent through the official website of the Lieutenant Governor’s Office.
Flags on all Government of Saskatchewan buildings will be placed at half-mast immediately and until sunset on the day of the funeral or memorial service. Arrangements are still pending.
