MOOSE JAW — City council has appointed Stephanie Mitchell as a class 1 building official for the City of Moose Jaw, allowing her to handle all duties of reviewing and inspecting structural projects.

Council unanimously approved the appointment during its June 24 regular meeting, using section 16 of the Construction Codes Act to make the decision. It also authorized the mayor and city clerk to sign the appointment certificate.

“This is a good news story … ,” said Michelle Sanson, director of planning and development. “We’re excited to have her in our department.”

Mitchell was working in the finance department when managers identified her as a suitable candidate for the building official role, Sanson explained. She then began training through the city’s career coaching program.

Mitchell studied for and passed her building official exams to attain her class 1 restrictive licence, while she was the successful applicant for the vacant class 1 building official position, the director continued.

Cynthia Starchuk, the city’s class 3 building official, will mentor Mitchell for several years since the latter is new to the position. Furthermore, Mitchell will assume all duties of reviewing and inspecting plans for class 1 buildings, such as dwellings, garages and decks.

Sanson added that the hope is that Mitchell will eventually achieve her class 3 building official licence in the next couple of years so she can take on larger projects.

The next regular council meeting is Monday, July 8.
