SGI and the RCMP are reminding drivers to stay safe this long weekend.

According to SGI, your risk of a crash doubles on long weekends. Every year in Saskatchewan, 15 people die and 535 others are injured in collisions over long weekends, based on a five-year average from 2013-2017.

In a press release, RCMP noted they laid 30 charges for impaired operation by alcohol on Saskatchewan roads during the 2018 August long weekend.

Drivers should be mindful of work zones this weekend.

“Please obey the posted speeds in our work zones as you enjoy your weekend camping or visiting family and friends,” Highways and Infrastructure Minister Lori Carr said in a press release. “We ask that if you have plans that include highway travel, please respect the signs and allow yourself additional time to get to your destination safely.”

Several projects are taking place on Saskatchewan roads right now, including grading on Highway 202 near Buffalo Pound Lake. A weekly highway construction update is available online.

Be sure to visit the Highway Hotline before hitting the road to access up-to-date information on Saskatchewan’s road conditions and closures.
