The Moose Jaw & District Seniors Association celebrates record membership this week

On June 12, the Moose Jaw & District Seniors Association celebrated their recent 500-member milestone with cake and coffee at the Tim Eaton’s building on Main Street.

In celebration of its recent 500-member milestone, the Moose Jaw & District Senior Citizens Association (MJDSCA) celebrated on June 12 with coffee and a cake at the Timothy Eaton’s building on Main Street.

The cake event was meant to allow staff and members to celebrate together and mingle, as the atmosphere is more akin to that of one large family.

“We would like to thank all our members for getting us to reach this milestone here at the centre,” said Tanya Legare, administrator for the MJDSCA.

There was nearly a traffic jam at the lineup as members patiently waited for a slice, and the hall was bustling with conversation and visiting relatives.

The MJDSCA is a non-profit association focused on the well-being of seniors over the age of 50. As part of this mission, they are always providing opportunities for low-income members in the community.

Members enjoyed more than a slice (or two) of cake, as a raffle was also held for an electric scooter, which was donated by the family of a member who no longer requires it. This is a great way to help those in the community receive access to mobility equipment when they otherwise would not be able to afford it.

For members who have not yet participated in the raffle, the draw will be held on July 31, 2023.

The MJDSCA offers a wide range of events to help seniors over the age of 50 stay active and keep in touch with friends and loved ones.

The schedule of activities covers Monday through to Friday, and time slots remain consistent.

Just a few activities include billiards, a year-round indoor walking track, pickleball, and cards. Billiards games cost a generous $0.65 per game for members.

For the artistically inclined, there is also a generously supplied arts and crafts room. Members can use the room and there are craft events on Mondays through Wednesdays at 1 p.m. As a new endeavour this week, residents from the Providence Place in Moose Jaw are using the room to share in the artistic spirit.

One exciting and anticipated activity is floor shuffleboard, where rocks are propelled forward by use of cue-sticks. For anyone interested in the game, drop in and hear about the exciting account of a local member who beat an international legend from the U.S.

The association may have just reached their 500th member, but they are still growing and still seeking out new individuals who are interested in joining. Membership is open to anyone over the age of 50.

Becoming a member with the MJDSCA is an easy process. Basic membership is $40 per year, and advanced membership including use of indoor fitness facilities is only $60 per year. Members also receive discounts with hall rentals and catering.

For anyone who needs to book a hall for special events, consider booking through the MJDSCA first. Proceeds help support the association in their quest to improve the lives of those in our community.

Featuring 3 halls of varying size and cost, the association handles basic setup and cleanup for booked events. There is a PA system set up and a projector is available to be rented. The club also holds a liquor license for those who want to celebrate with a cold beverage.

The XYZ Hall can accommodate 200 people, and the Card Room can accommodate 70.

Whether seeking out membership or visiting loved ones, come stop by and see why the MJDSCA is drawing in record numbers this year. Anyone from the community is welcome to stop by and mingle, and new guests are always well-received.

For hall bookings, membership inquiries, or more information, the MJDSCA can be reached at 306-694-4223.
