February has been both busy and relaxing for the students of Central Collegiate. After finals, the students jumped into semester two on Monday, February 3. Two weeks into the semester, there was an open mic organized by students and teachers from multiple schools that were a part of Journey to Hope. People shared their own poems, stories, and even sang songs to inspire hope to others. After that, the winter break began and gave the students a chance to relax.
During the week off, some students continued to stay busy. Students from Central’s fundraisers, Toasty Toes and Operation Christmas Child, worked at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts to help raise money for next year. The money will be saved and allow next year’s volunteers to have a head start on fundraising to buy winter clothing, toys, and school supplies for children in need.
The SLC has also kept busy with celebrating Valentine’s day by planning a school wide game called King Of Hearts and hiding chocolates all around the school. SLC also helped with spreading awareness about Red Cross’s national Pink Shirt Day and posted videos on Instagram to help educate students on bullying and helping others.
Central Collegiate’s senior band went on their yearly band trip, this time going to Winnipeg and Brandon. They performed in front of music professors from the University of Brandon and University of Winnipeg. They received some feedback saying that they “needed to breathe together” to help improve their overall sound. It was a very fun and educational experience. Some of the grade 9 to 11 students also had the opportunity to write the Waterloo Math Contest. They are expecting the results in a few weeks.
Sports at Central Collegiate have been going excellently this past month. There was a winter pep rally to showcase all of the school’s sports teams and increase school spirit among the students. One of the boy’s curling teams placed first in the city and second in the district. They are going to be on their way to provincials next. Basketball teams have been performing extremely well. The senior boys are currently ranked first in the league, and the girls are ranked second. The junior boys are currently tied for first in the league, and the girls are second. The senior girls basketball team also helped fund raise by playing in Victor Elias’ Shoot for the Cure Pink tournament. They ended up raising over $5000 dollars for an individual in Estevan.
Both teachers and students are continuing to stay busy at Central Collegiate, whether it is with extracurriculars, school work, or fundraising. Overall, Central has been having a great 2020 so far.
