MOOSE JAW — Sept. 25 was Canada’s official National Tree Day, which is also when the City of Moose Jaw announced this year’s Tree of Significance winner.

The city’s Tree of Significance program has been held annually in conjunction with National Tree Day and National Forest Week since its inception in 2011.

“This program encourages residents to take notice of and appreciate the beauty of our Urban Forest,” explained Nijil Martin, forestry and horticulture supervisor.

The City of Moose Jaw’s 2024 Tree of Significance is a mature weeping birch tree located in the front yard of 33 Lewry Crescent. This tree was nominated as one of the few remaining trees of its kind and is approximately 30 years old. The property owners fondly refer to it as their “Grande Dame.” It is an excellent specimen of its species.

All Trees of Significance since the program’s inception in 2011 can be viewed via a link on the city’s website. The community services department encourages Moose Jaw residents to take notice of and appreciate our urban forest.
