The finalists have been decided in the Moose Jaw high school girls basketball league.
The Vanier Spirits punched their ticket to the title game on Friday night, taking a 60-49 victory over the Lumsden Angels at Vanier.
They’ll be joined in Tuesday night’s title game by the Central Cyclones, who defeated the Peacock Toilers 67-43 in their semifinal back on Mar. 8. The game between Vanier and Lumsden was to be decided then as well, but a winter storm forced another postponement in a season filled with them,
When the two teams did hit the court, it was a close battle, as one would expect between two teams who finished with identical 5-3 records.
Even as close as things were, Vanier would lead throughout -- taking a 15-11 edge out of the first quarter and 25-21 lead into the half before pulling away by outscoring Lumsden 17-11 in the third quarter.
Feona Tolentino led Vanier with 14 points, while Piper Olson and Grace Waldenberger each contributed 11 to go along with 10 from Callie Klemenz. Jordyn Exner had a 15-point showing for the Angels, Sierra Manz contributed 11 to their cause.
The Cyclones will head into the city championship game as the favourites, after finishing a 7-1 regular season that included a 68-49 win over Vanier back on Jan. 14 and a 75-52 win on Feb. 8.
One of the boys' finalists has also been decided after the Peacock Toilers took a 55-41 win over the Vanier Vikings on Mar. 8. Like the girls, both title-game teams were to be set that night, but the other semi featuring Notre Dame at Central was postponed then and again delayed on Mar. 10. As a result, their contest will be played Saturday at 7 p.m. at Central.
Both the boys' and girls' city finals are slated for Tuesday night, with the times and venues to be announced.
