Hunt scored only 1:20 into his first game with the Virden Oil Capitals and added an assist on the power play in the second period as Virden took a 5-3 victory over the Winkler Flyers in Winkler on Friday night.
The contest was the first actual game action for the Minnesota Wild draft pick since early March and came only a couple of days after Hunt was named to the National Junior Team selection camp.
Hunt will play four games for the Oil Caps before reporting to Red Deer for the month-long NJT camp. He’s one of five WHLers in the Virden line-up, including Spokane’s Grady Lane, Winnipeg’s Conor Geekie, Kelowna’s Jake Pooleand Swift Current’s Braeden Lewis.
Virden improved to 6-0-1 on the season with the win and sit in first place in the MJHL Interior Division.
The Flin Flon Bombers will also benefit from having a Moose Jaw Warrior in their line-up, as Brad Ginnell -- who was acquired off waivers from the Spokane Chiefs in the offseason -- will play his first game at the Whitney Forum on Saturday night against La Ronge.
The overage forward will be joined by cousin Riley Ginnell from the Brandon Wheat Kings, and with that comes an interesting connection.
As the Bombers pointed out on Twitter Saturday afternoon, Brad and Riley are grandsons of legendary Flin Flon player and coach Patty Ginnell. Patty played for the Bombers in their 1957 Memorial Cup-winning campaign and also coached the Bobby Clarke-led 1968-69 Bombers to a WCHL title as part of a 16-year junior hockey coach career.
Flin Flon is 1-2 in the preseason, having played all three of their previous games against the Ice Wolves. They open their SJHL campaign in Melfort on Nov. 6.
