With the way he’s been playing as of late, it seemed like only a matter of time before Moose Jaw Warriors goaltender Carl Tetachuk had the impressive results to show for it.
That time came last week -- and the Western Hockey League took notice.
The overage netminder was named the WHL’s Goaltender of the Week for Feb. 20 after turning in a pair of impressive showings on the road, including a shutout against the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Feb. 16 followed by a 4-2 win over the Prince Albert Raiders on Feb. 19.
All told, he finished the week with a 0.96 goals against average and .966 save percentage.
The contest in Lethbridge was as dramatic as they come, as Tetachuk stopped 33 shots through regulation and overtime on top of the first three shooters of the shootout before the Hurricanes broke through.
Unfortunately for the Lethbridge product, the Hurricanes’ Bryan Thomson wouldn’t allow a goal, and Tetachuk’s first shutout of the season ended up as the rarest of losses.
Tetachuk ran his shutout streak to over 70 minutes before the Raiders scored midway through the second period in P.A., but that did little to faze him, and Tetachuk would make a handful of big saves as the game wound down -- including a spectacular diving stop in the game’s waning moments that ended up as the WHL Save of the Night.
Tetachuk’s 2.81 goals against average is 12th best among goaltenders with at least 1,000 minutes played and the best in the WHL among netminders with 2,000 minutes. His 0.914 save percentage is tied for fourth-best in the league, and his 22 wins -- part of a 22-10-3-2 overall mark -- are tied for third in the WHL.
The Warriors are back in action on Friday when they host the Swift Current Broncos. Game time is 7 p.m. at Mosaic Place.
