Overall, products like the Beyond Meat burger are not quite catching on with the majority of Canadian consumers.
According to a survey from the Angus Reid Institute, nearly all Canadians (95 per cent) were aware of these products, but only 39 per cent of respondents had actually tried one.
Moreover, 45 per cent of Canadians say these products are likely a fad.
Younger generations, however, are less wary of the plant-based meat alternatives. In fact, Canadians between the ages of 18 and 34 are much more likely to have tried these products (58 per cent have done so), or plan to (48 per cent). About 70 per cent of the respondents in this demographic believe these alternatives are more than just a passing fad.
Eighty per cent of those who have tried plant-based meats say they enjoyed the taste, but just 41 per cent said the value for their money was poor or terrible.
Also of note, among Canadians who regularly eat meat, 22 per cent say they would like to reduce the amount they eat. But 39 per cent of respondents between the ages of 18 and 34 say they would like to cut back on the amount of meat they consume.
